Belk College of Business
The Belk College of Business (COB) offers master classrooms, general computer labs and instructional computer labs. There are currently 14 master classrooms housed in the Friday building. These classrooms support instruction with networked PC, VCR, DVD, document camera, high fidelity audio, and laptop projection capabilities.
COB Labs
Friday 216 and 338 computer labs are staffed by technical assistants and are available on a walk-in, first come first served basis. Two instructional computer labs, Friday 280 and 339, are reserved by instructors for hands-on projects and online testing. All labs offer Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Microsoft Office 2003 Professional, statistical packages such as SAS and SPSS, financial packages such as CRSP (Center for Research in Securities Prices) and Standard and Poor’s Research Insight, multi-user CASE tools and a variety of discipline specific software.
COB Computer Recommendations
The College does not require that you own a computer. If you decide to purchase a computer, the Belk College of Business recommends that you follow the standard UNC Charlotte Student Computing recommendations for hardware and software.
College of Architecture
The College of Architecture (COA) maintains a computer lab with 18 Macintosh G4s and G5s available to all students, faculty, and staff, with priority given to architecture majors. The COA also maintains a high-end Macintosh G5 classroom for use by students enrolled in digital design architecture classes. Get answers to frequently asked computing questions.
COA Lab
The COA computer lab includes scanners for flat and slide media, CD and DVD mastering technology, graphics and page layout software, video editing software, and 2D and 3D computer aided design software. There is also a print lab which features large format color printing and large format scanning equipment. Digital cameras and camcorders are also available for checkout.
COA Computer Requirements
Architecture majors are required to purchase their own Apple Macintosh computer and software for use within the design studio in support of the College’s goal to fully integrate the digital tools into the design process. In addition, due to an increasing need to use a computer across campus, in the field, at remote studio locations, on the road and in overseas exchange programs, the COA recommends the purchase of a Macintosh laptop computer. The COA provides a detailed and frequently updated
purchasing guide.
College of Arts & Sciences
The College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) offers labs with over 300 computers in seven buildings on campus.
COAS Labs
Several student labs feature Macintosh computers running Mac OS 10.3. A 25-seat Mosaic lab is also available. The labs have a variety of specialized software that supports the instructional needs of the College’s many departmental and program offerings. Many labs are open for student use when not scheduled for classroom instruction. Some labs have assistants available to help students with technical questions.
COAS Computer Recommendations
The College does not require that you own a computer; however, many students find it helpful and convenient to do so. If you decide to purchase a computer, the College of Arts and Sciences recommends that you follow the standard UNC Charlotte Student Computing recommendations for PC hardware and software.
College of Computing and Informatics
The College of Computing and Informatics (CCI) has moved all of its offices and research facilities into the newly completed James H. and Martha H. Woodward Hall.
CCI Labs
A state-of-the-art computer lab on the third floor of Woodward Hall provides both Windows and Linux environments available to anyone registered in a CCI course. In addition, there is wireless connectivity throughout Woodward Hall for those students with their own portable computing product.
CCI Computer Recommendations
The College does not require that you own a computer; however, many students find it helpful and convenient to do so. If you decide to purchase a computer, the CCI recommends that you follow the standard UNC Charlotte Student Computing recommendations for PC hardware and software.
College of Education
The College of Education (COED) provides technology support for graduate and undergraduate programs through the College’s Office of Information Technology.
COED Labs
COED maintains two 24 student workstation classrooms with an instructor workstation, video projection and stereo sound, as well as two 30 workstation general labs offering standard applications, statistical packages and other program specific applications. The facility also includes read/write CD ROM drives, digital scanning, and high speed printing. There are nine model instructional methods classrooms each of which has one instructor workstation with digital projection capability. A video lab is equipped with closed circuit TV in seven small group session rooms and one large group room. All of these rooms are connected to a video control room used for monitoring, taping and distribution.
An IT development lab provides facilities for faculty and graduate students to collaborate on technology based projects. The lab currently has five workstations used to capture and edit analog and digital video and scan images and documents. The facility also has desktop publishing and research intensive software as well as high speed laser print capability.
COED Computer Recommendations
The College does not require that you own a computer; however, many students find it helpful and convenient to do so. If you decide to purchase a computer, the College of Education recommends that you follow the standard UNC Charlotte Student Computing recommendations for PC hardware and software.
College of Engineering
The College of Engineering (COE) offers a state of the art academic computing network known as "Mosaic" (Mosaic Computing Environment) which provides students with high-end workstations in public engineering labs all over the campus. Mosaic is a distributed client-server network that delivers services and over 250 engineering, productivity, and communications software packages to the Sun Solaris (UNIX) and Windows XP platforms.
COE Labs
COE labs are accessible 24 hours a day/365 days a year (except Christmas and New Year) and have all the software required for COE classes. After-hours and weekend Help Desk assistance is provided by student Technical Assistants. COE students have access to wide-format, color and duplex printers and flatbed scanners located in the COE labs and Help Desk area. "MosaicAnywhere Remote Desktop" allows you to run a complete Engineering Computing desktop from your residence hall using your personal computer and a high speed Internet connection.
COE Computer Recommendations
COE does not require students to own computers. Many of the software packages used in COE classes are either too expensive or too complex to be installed on individual student owned systems. Students who choose to purchase a computer for their own use will generally still make extensive use of the College's computer labs particularly after their freshman year.
If purchasing a computer, COE recommends a desktop system unless mobility is necessary. Since some common engineering applications offer free or low-cost student versions, the additional performance of a desktop is generally more beneficial for an engineering student than the mobility of a laptop. Although there are no specific requirements for compatibility with the College's computing network, COE provides general recommendations and sample PC specifications on the web.
College of Health & Human Services
The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) classrooms have built-in data and video projectors with a sound system for instructor projection from computers. These classrooms also provide VCRs and DVD players, document cameras and other video and audio devices.
CHHS Labs
CHHS offers a 30-seat computer lab in the Health Informatics Lab in Colvard and a 4-seat computer lab in the Health Informatics Lab in Belk Gym. A student assistant is available in each lab during open hours to help students. In addition to the standard applications, the lab computers offer more than 40 specialized software programs for CHHS students.
CHHS Computer Recommendations
The College does not require that you own a computer; however, many students find it helpful and convenient to do so. If you decide to purchase a computer, the CHHS recommends that you follow the standard UNC Charlotte Student Computing recommendations for PC hardware, including a sound card with speakers and a CD-RW/DVD drive. It is also recommended that you purchase Microsoft Office software so that your files are compatible with your instructors’.
